Halloween is around the corner, which means a lot of ghosts and princesses knocking on your door and pounds of candy in your children’s arms. The scariest sight of the holiday? The effects all those treats have on your child’s mouth!
Follow these tips to help your child enjoy a sweet and safe Halloween!
Safety Tips
Always have a travel buddy!
NEVER go inside a stranger’s house.
Look both ways before crossing the street.
Create a time to contact Mom and Dad.
Candy Tips
Pick out a few pieces of candy for the week - freeze the rest!
Donate your extra candy! Many dentists offer Halloween Candy Buy Back programs - children get prizes or money in exchange for their candy. The candy is sent to our troops to enjoy a treat during the holidays.
Create a “Treat Time” - a time of the day when they can enjoy their treats. During meals are the most beneficial because that’s when saliva flow is the highest and can help fight against tooth decay.
Candy doesn’t have to be the only treat this holiday - substitute candy for some fun and festive snacks!
Dental Tips
Drink water - drink water while eating candy to help fight against the bacteria that promotes tooth decay.
Rinse your mouth - rinsing after eating candy helps kick the sticky stuff out of their gums and teeth.
Brush your teeth - make sure your little one is still brushing on Halloween day and night. They should brush 30 minutes to an hour after eating any candy.
From all of us here at Pediatric Dentistry of Suffolk County, we wish you a happy and healthy Halloween! If you have any questions or teeth emergencies this holiday, give us a call at either our Commack or Medford Location.
