It’s officially October, and that can only mean one thing--the countdown to Halloween is on! For most children that means bags of candy and sugary snacks, but for parents, that means concerns over their child’s dental health. Keep your kid’s teeth safe with these Halloween dental tips:

Timing is Everything: Kids should eat candy with meals or shortly after. Saliva increases during meal times, helping to minimize acid and bacteria that is formed from these sweets.

Choose Candy Carefully: Hard candy, sticky candy or candy that stays in your child’s mouth for a long time should be avoided. Candy that lingers takes longer to wash away, playing a greater role in tooth decay. If your child insists on having a piece of candy, opt for chocolate and make sure they brush right afterwards.

Drink Up: Drinking water can help your child’s chances at preventing tooth decay. If they choose bottled water, make sure they keep an eye out for ones that are fluoridated. Water helps remove lodged food particles  sugar that is stuck on their teeth.

Maintain Proper Dental Care: Of course if your child does want to indulge in some Halloween candy, make sure that they are always following a proper dental routine, including brushing twice a day for two minutes and flossing too!

In order to really ensure great dental health, make sure your child is keeping up with their regular dental visits. At Pediatric Dentistry of Suffolk County, children will receive superior dental care in a nurturing and compassionate atmosphere.
