How many times have you finally gotten your children into bed, only to hear the words “I’m hungry” come out of their mouths? Is it just their way of stalling bedtime? Perhaps, but studies show that children who go to bed hungry don’t sleep well, so you should take their snack request seriously. Here are some healthy bedtime treats to fill their tummies so you can tuck them in:
Whole grain crackers with cheese: Cheese is great as it triggers the flow of saliva in the mouth and doesn’t contain a lot of sugar.
Low sugar cereal with milk: Make sure the milk is plain and not sweetened to satisfy their hunger and keep their teeth safe.
Unsalted almonds: These are packed with protein to keep them full throughout the night without the sugary additives.
Oatmeal: Make sure the oatmeal is plain with no sugar added. The warmth of this treat will be soothing at bedtime.
It’s important to plan your child’s bedtime snacks at least 30-45 minutes prior to bedtime. This will ensure that they don’t get a belly ache before bed and is also long enough to give their tooth enamel time to strengthen back up before brushing.
Keep in mind that their snacks should be small enough to tide them over and help them get sleep. Refrain from giving them anything sugary that will not only spike their blood sugar and jolt them awake, but will also damage their tooth enamel and put them at a higher risk for cavities over night.
