If your child has ever expressed their fears to you, we can almost guarantee that the dentist is on their list. For a young child, the dentist's office can be a scary, unfamiliar place. Luckily, there are a few things parents can do to ease children's anxiety about going to the dentist. Check out a few tips below.

Stay calm. It's likely that you may fear the dentist a little bit, too! However, it's extremely important to conceal your fears because there's a chance your child will pick up on the fact that you're nervous as well. Staying calm, cool and collected and explaining all of the positive aspects of the dentist is the best way to go.

Distract them. Here at Pediatric Dentistry of Suffolk County I & II, our waiting rooms are child-friendly and filled with plenty of toys and activities to keep your child occupied and happy while you wait. Packing their favorite toy or book is another great way to distract them on your way to the office.

Rewards. If your child is having a hard time accepting that they're headed to the dentist, giving them a reward to look forward to may do the trick. We're not talking huge rewards, but perhaps letting them pick their favorite restaurant to go to for lunch or a trip to their favorite park afterwards may be just what you need to get them through the appointment.

Preparation. Be sure that your child is well rested for the appointment, hydrated and has something in their stomach. Being tired, thirsty or hungry may make your child more irritable than normal.

With these great tips, the next visit to Pediatric Dentistry of Suffolk County I & II should be easier than ever!
