You've heard the word fluoride your whole life and you know that it is an ingredient found in toothpaste. You know that it is beneficial for your teeth, but knowing exactly what fluoride is and how it should be used is just as important for maintaining adequate dental hygiene.
Fluoride is a chemical ion of the element fluorine. Sometimes found in drinking water, and almost always found in toothpaste, fluoride’s key purposes are to prevent cavities and tooth decay. Although fluoride has some substantial benefits too much of it can be detrimental.
Excessive fluoride ingestion by preschool-aged children can lead to dental fluorosis, which is a chalky white to even brown discoloration of the permanent teeth. You should be aware of the fluoride content in your child’s toothpaste and in order avoid dental fluorosis.
Also keep in mind that your child may not be able to properly dispose of excess fluoride while brushing their teeth. Younger children have a higher risk of ingestion because they may not be able to spit out the toothpaste. Paying close attention while your children brush, and being aware of the risks of improper tooth brushing habits can help prevent your child from obtaining dental fluorosis or other dental diseases.
Here at Pediatric Dentistry of Suffolk County we take pride in educating parents and their children on proper dental hygiene practices by putting an emphasis on total preventive care. This begins with regular hygiene visits, check-ups and continued home oral care. We want each child to have the best possible chance at a beautiful smile.
