Many children have a negative reaction when told they’re heading
to a dentist appointment.
Children are most comfortable around people they know and environments
that make them feel safe. Parents sometimes feel the best option is to not take
their child to the dentist to avoid the fear altogether.
Start Young
Many Pediatric Dentists recommend bringing your child in for
their first dental visit at age one to eliminate dental fears as early on as
possible.
Keep It Simple
When preparing your child for their dental visit, try not to
include too many details of what your child may experience. This can cause
unnecessary anxiety and fear. When speaking of the visit, maintain a positive
attitude and an upbeat tone of voice to make your child feel at ease.
Watch Your Selection of Words
When speaking about the upcoming dental visit, refrain from
using the words shot, pain or hurt. This way, your child doesn't go into the
appointment associating those words with the dentist.
Consider a Pretend Visit
Try setting up a mock dental appointment at home and play
pretend with your child.
Emphasize the Importance of Good Oral Hygiene
Remind your children that the dentist will help them to be
healthy and have a beautiful smile.
